Why Your Marketing Isn’t Working (and What to Do Instead)

So many coaches and service providers I see marketing their business online seem to think that marketing is all about them: their services, their wins, their expertise, their results.

And I get it. You’ve worked hard. You should be proud of what you’ve built and what you offer. But what a lot of people miss is that marketing isn’t about you. It’s about them.

Your audience. Your dream clients. The people you want to help.

If your content isn’t landing, if engagement is low, if people aren’t clicking or inquiring or buying … it might not be because your work isn’t valuable (because I know it is). It might just be because the focus of your message is pointing in the wrong direction.

What do I mean by that?

It means your content is centered on you … what you offer, how your process works, the results you’ve gotten … instead of being centered on your ideal client and what they care about.

You might be unintentionally speaking at your audience about yourself instead of speaking to them in a way that helps them see themselves in your message.

And that small shift can make a big difference.

Let me break it down. Speaking at them sounds like:
“I offer a 12-week coaching program with weekly calls, Voxer support, and a custom workbook.”

Speaking to them sounds like:
“You’ll stop attracting the wrong clients and start hearing ‘you’re exactly who I’ve been looking for’ from the right ones, which leads to a business that feels aligned, sustainable, and energizing, instead of draining.”

See the difference? One is focused on the features of your offer. The other is focused on the transformation it provides for them, which is what they care about and what makes them buy.

When your audience can picture themselves in your words, when your message reflects their current thoughts, struggles, or desires, that’s when they pay attention. That’s when connection and trust start to build. That’s when they start to think, “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.”

And listen, I’m not pretending I’ve mastered this perfectly, because I haven’t. This is one of those things that’s so easy to miss in your own business. We’re all close to our work. We all default to describing what we do, how we do it, and what we’ve achieved. Especially when we’re tired or busy or just trying to get the post out already.

So here’s what I want you to try instead:

Flip the focus.

👉 Instead of talking about your services, your offers, or your wins, and start talking about what your audience is feeling, needing, and looking for and how you can help.

👉 Instead of listing out what’s included in your offer, talk about the outcome of working with you and what transformation that outcome with provide.

👉 Instead of highlighting your wins, highlight what those wins mean for your clients … how it impacts the way you serve them, or how it reflects their journey and transformation.

Don’t just tell them what you do. Show them how it changes something for them. How it makes their life or business better.

That’s what creates connection and builds trust. And that’s what gets the right people to take the next step.

So next time you sit down to write about your offer, ask yourself:

  • What immediate outcome can I offer? And how will it transform their business/life after they have the outcome?
(Be specific here: what’s different for them on the other side of this work?)
  • What exact problem am I solving?
(What’s keeping them stuck, and how does your offer help them move forward?)
  • How can I make them feel seen, heard, and understood in my messaging?
(Can they see themselves in your words? Do they feel like you “get” them?)

When your audience sees themselves reflected in your content, when they feel like you’re talking to them, they’ll lean in. That’s when they feel connected, valued, and ready to take the next step.

So yes, your story matters. Your offers matter. Your wins matter. But keep your focus on them. Because that’s where the magic happens.
