How to Escape the Comparison Trap (Without Losing Sight of Your Business)
How to reclaim your clarity and confidence when the comparison trap is pulling you in.
If you’re an entrepreneur growing a successful business online, chances are you’ve dealt with what I call the “comparison trap” more than once.
You’re not new at this, but suddenly, everyone’s launching bigger, showing up everywhere, rebranding louder. and out-hustling each other. All of the sudden, the business you’ve built that you’ve been proud of and content with now feels small and insignificant.
Thoughts of comparison start running through your head. “How do they make scaling a business look so easy? Why does my content feel so messy? Should I be doing having huge launches like them or doing what they’re doing?”
This may not always be imposter syndrome. Oftentimes this is what happens when you’re doing great things in your business and your brain is overloaded and overstimulated by outside noise.
Confidence vs Clarity
Comparison doesn’t always mean you’re insecure about your business or brand. It often means you’re overstimulated by everything you’re seeing and hearing online … which leads to losing clarity on what actually matters for your business and forgetting how much you’ve already built and how far you’ve come.
And for many of my ADHD entrepreneur clients, that overstimulation can become paralyzing and can lead to brand confusion and decision fatigue.
Comparison Quietly Chips Away At Your Brand Clarity
When you’re paying too much attention to what others are doing, your own voice gets quieter. You make tweaks to your message based on what others are doing and saying, which ultimately waters down your message. Your content starts to feel more generic and less authentic. And suddenly, your dream clients are no longer able to recognize the amazingness that makes you different.
When you recognize this happening, take a minute to think about this:
What got you here in your business? Your unique perspective, your voice, your story.
What will get you to your next level? Doubling down on your unique perspective, your voice, and your story. Not copying the big, shiny things someone else is doing in their business.
How to Spot When You’re in the Comparison Trap
You’re may be in the comparison trap if you’re doing things like:
- not posting because you think what you have to say “has already been said,”
- feeling like your brand is inconsistent, flat, or “not there yet,”
- consuming more content than you’re creating,
- second-guessing your offers, copy, pricing, etc based on what other’s are doing
Sound familiar? You and me both, which means you’re not alone. And you likely don’t necessarily need a mindset coach to fix it (although mindset and business coaches can be great investments for your business).
You likely need clarity. You need to get back in your lane (without completely disconnecting from your industry, peers, or your vision.)
What to Do to Realign Your Brand
- Reconnect with your brand strategy and message. What do you really want to be known for (not what you think sounds trendy or looks impressive)? Who are you doing this work for and why?
- Do an audit on what outside input you’re allowing in. Mute or unfollow accounts that spike your anxiety. Unsubscribe from email lists that make you second guess things in your brand/business. Give your nervous system some breathing room.
- Celebrate your accomplishments. Look at how far you’ve come in your business. Pay attention to your metrics, your results, your testimonials, your progress. Don’t ignore your wins. That’s when comparison sneaks in.
- Remember your purpose. Why you’re doing what you’re doing. Create content from a place of service, not reaction. Stop trying to “keep up” and start creating what your audience actually needs to hear from you. Even if you think others are already saying it, no one says it the way you do, with your perspective, voice, personality, and value.
You didn’t start your business to be a duplicate of someone else. You started it for the freedom, flexibility, connection, and impact … in your way and on your terms.
The antidote to comparison isn’t more confidence. It’s more clarity. Clarity on your message. Your voice. Your audience. Your offer. When those pieces are all aligned, when you’re staying in your own lane with your eyes focused on your own business, comparison loses its power. Your brand becomes magnetic again. Your message strengthens. Your ideal clients see your value and can’t wait to work with you.
